seven months later

okay, so I've already written a review here but now that I've had this bike for 7 months, I wanted to leave another.

this bike has genuinely changed my life. I've always loved cycling, but had never made an investment into a nice bike like this one, and I wish I'd done it sooner. before buying my 4130 All-Road, I usually declined to join adventurous rides with my friends because I couldn't keep up on a slight incline with my $60 craiglist bike. I thought I was slow and out of shape and clumsy. it turns out that all of those were true but this beautiful bike is so fun to ride that I'm now just as fast, in shape and nimble as the rest of my cycling friends. my rides were previously limited to short jaunts in a 3-mile radius around my neighborhood. now I commute to and from work and ride 25+ miles a day all over Portland just for fun.

this bike has taken me safely over chunky, sharp gravel on the Deschutes River Trail and on Oregon country back roads. it's kept me upright through slippery mud where my friends have fallen down. it's stayed neck & neck with much fancier road bikes on every hill thanks to the generous gears. it handles & feels like an extension of my own body, and there are no conditions I don't trust it in, even with 700cs on.

there are a few things I would recommend upgrading right away. getting a new chain and chainring was a simple improvement that made a huge difference for me. the handlebar tape it comes with is just fine, but putting my own on allowed me to appreciate the stock handlebars more. and most importantly, the brakes - I can't recommend new brakes enough. steep descents had my hands aching from the effort of braking until I put Juin Tech semi-hydraulic brakes on three months ago.

I could go on and on about this bike forever even though I don't know shit about bikes. I've become so much more active, so much healthier, so much happier ever since my first ride seven months ago. I wanted a bike that I could primarily ride around my city, and sometimes take on whatever dirt, gravel, or muddy trail I wanted, and this has proven time and time again to be the perfect thing. I have done things I never thought I could do and crushed PR after PR just after a few months of casual cycling. please buy this bike, especially if you're a little bit of a tenderfoot in the cycling world but want to do more and see more on two wheels. the 4130 All-Road will see you safely and exhilaratingly through any road or not-road you want to take.

What an amazing bike. Went for my first spin down the Katy Trail (gravel) then headed downtown to catch the Cardinal game. There's nowhere this bike can't go. Solid bike. Smooth ride. Beautiful color way. I love it. Thank you for making such a beautiful and inexpensive bike!

Bang for your buck is an understatement.

This bike is amazing. Especially considering the price. The possibilities are endless here. You can take in on a commute, around the local park, on a long day ride, on a multi day ride all while on basically any terrain depending on your tires. I took mine on technical mountain bike downhill then rode it to work in bike lanes without thinking twice. Sure, the components are a bit cheap, but those can be replaced and upgraded easily. The frame is SOLID and the components, although seemingly on the cheaper side, are still perfectly capable of whatever you throw at them. I can’t complain at all. I am very satisfied and excited about the endless possibilities and roads ahead.

Best value for a gravel bike. But has its flaws.

You simply can’t beat the value of this bike with features that include thru axles, a 1x11 drivetrain, and a steel frameset with plenty of mounting options. This being said, the brakes need replaced immediately if you hope to actually stop (vs. slowing down). Also the shifting mechanism works well, but you need to very gently squeeze the brake lever a certain way or you will shift/brake at the same time. Not ideal to jam the gearing when you simple wanted to stop. Other than these two major issues, it's a fun bike to ride!

best bike I have owned

Some context on the title. I am not a road biker and this is my first gravel bike. That said I been commuting, mountain biking and some road riding for 30 years. I have owned bikes made by Foes, Santa Cruz, Yeti, Charge, Pure, Fuji, Trek, Specialized and the list goes on. I have built many of my bikes with only a frame/shock and if I could design from scratch how I think a gravel bike should ride and feel, this bike is about perfect. Fast on the road, nimble and solid feeling on rougher terrain, it is a great all around bike and would be a great commuter too! Well done!

Excellent bike

Excellent bike, got the bike built and put 20 miles on it the next day. I think it is going to make a great training/bikepacking bike.

Overall look of the bike 4/5 bike had a small dent on the top rail and some scuffs on the wheels from shipping. I do not fault State for this it’s just part of shipping a bike. Love the color of the bike and the overall look is really good.

Components/ build 4/5 I ordered the carbon monster fork and will speak on it briefly. I love the fork it reduces the weight of the bike came with wolf tooth bottom race and bearing. Issue was it did not come with a new top bearing and the original allowed some play so I swapped it out with a different one on my own. Also did not receive enough spacers for the height that I wanted to set my head at so I had to get additional spacers.

Components on the bike itself seem good, brakes work well once I got them adjusted, shifters and drive chain work smooth and efficiently. Only note is that as others have said my derailleur hanger was bent during shipping so I had to straighten it during the build. Stock seat and pedals are comfortable and perfect for casual riding. I will upgrade them though as I plan to ride more often.

Wheels and tires 5/5 I ordered both the 700 and 650, the tires are a top quality tire and ride very comfortably, the wheels are light and were pretty close to true out of the box. I ordered tubeless kits for both tires and have to say the kits are not as good as what you can get online for less. The sealant that came with mine was very thick, I did not use it, I used the bike shops sealant.

Other issues, one of the inserts for the bottom bottle holder had messed up threads and was missing the screw. I am going to need to tap the threads to get it to work. Minor issue but one that should not have passed quality.

I do want to take a moment a speak on my objection to the warranty policy. My bike was assembled by me and a professional. But because he does not have a shop I cannot activate the warranty for my frame. I think you should stand behind your product no matter how it is assembled. Incorrect assembly would show itself in the malfunction. Not a deal breaker for me but it would be nice to build a bike on my own as I enjoy the project and not void the warranty.

Overall thoughts on the bike. I love the 4130 all road with the upgraded forks it’s light and fast. The bike rides very well on pavement and gravel/mud. I find that the gearing is perfect for my current needs though that may change once I add bikepacking load. I would definitely recommend this bike to anyone as a great starter bike or as a daily rider. I am also happy with State as a company the times that I contacted them I received quick responses and all of my needs were met.

Greenwich - London, UK

I was nervous about ordering a 4130 All Road as I'm based in the UK but I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly I received it tbh! Judging from the reviews I had read about it it was going to take some time but it was actually very quick. In fact it came a day early. After unpacking it, I have noted cosmetic damage to the front wheel rim due to the packaging in the box which could be better protected as the front wheel is attached to the crank arm on delivery in the box. I was expecting damage to the rear derailleur but it looks like State Bicycle have sorted that packaging issue out as it was fine, but they still need to package the front wheel better to avoid such issues. I've built the bike up now and the only thing I can see mechanically is that the front wheel is off centre with the centre of the front fork and not sure if there is a spacer missing, but saying that, after my first ride the 4130 All Road feels great and I'm happy. The gears run smooth and the size 43 Extra Small is a perfect fit as Im 5"6 tall. It's a shame that All City don't distributed these here in the UK but hey I'm probably now only one of a few, if not the only (!) cyclist, that is a proud owner of this Black Canyon 4130 650B gravel bike in London UK!

Great bike at a great price!

Amazing bike! The finish of the Steel frame looks great/high quality. The group set shifts very smoothly. I smile ear to ear when riding this rig on single track - the 650b wheels really can take a beating! Really excited to take this bike on some longer bike packing adventures as well as make some incremental upgrades to make it uniquely mine! Highly recommend this bike!

Love it - rides easy and light but handles gravel and off road pretty effortlessly. Super satisfied with my purchase and will be recommending to others in the future. Excited to build it up for bikepacking. Thanks!

Love it - rides easy and light but handles gravel and off road pretty effortlessly. Super satisfied with my purchase and will be recommending to others in the future. Excited to build it up for bikepacking. Thanks!
