How to change the shift cable

These shifters came equipped on an 4130 All-Road I purchased in 2022. They are surprising effective shifters; they shift similar to SRAM which I prefer, but I would rather they had separate brake/shift paddles (that would make them 5 stars in my opinion).

I am mainly writing this review to respond to GT's question about how to swap the shift cable as it is more difficult than the SRAM or Shimano brifters I have used in the past. Earlier this years I loaned my All-Road to a buddy and he attempted to adjust the rear derailleur without me and succeeded in ripping it off in the rear wheel. I bought another State derailleur and needed to replace the cable after installing it.

In my pictures, on the inner side of the shifter, the shift cable is circled blue and some screws you need to remove are circled red. The screws remove a plate. In my experience it was possible to remove the old cable without removing the screws/plate pictured, but I could not install a new cable without removing the plate. After the plate was removed I easily able to insert a new cable top down through a guide then thread it through the bottom of the shift mechanism.

Pretty decent

The only real downfall to this 1x11 set up is that it is a bit annoying to index properly.

Spice up an old friend

Sometimes the new bike of your dreams is one you already own. I finally got around to snagging some new Allroad shifters. For less than a Benjamin I was able to transition my old Thunderbird from a flatbar with bar-end shifter back to a dropbar integrated set-up. I love the single lever shifter paired with the old Box One mtb deraileur. This shifter is compatible with MTB rear mech so mullets are a must. The levers feel great and shift well! (Before and after pics included)

Still dialing it in…

This is a replacement as the original one (which shifted wonderfully right out of the box) needed a cable replacement. Trying to “thread” the cable in the shifter’s body was impossible…. So I’ve simply decided to spend the money for a new one - rather than continue to use a bar end I had to resort to.
Now I’m just trying to get this one to shift as smoothly as the other one does/did.

Anyone know the secret to getting the cable through that incredibly difficult opening?

1x11 Shift levers and mechanical disk brakes.

I have yet to take them on a full ride but around the house they shift and brake great! The price on these are very reasonable compared to Shimano of SRAM.

easy installation, and works well

It was quicl to install, and works great. The same as what comes with the original bike, same look too.
