State 4130 SS

Lovely bike. Rides smooth, the 38mm tires are very compliant on crappy Houston roads. 4130 frame is a tad heavy and yet totally awesome as you'd expect. And the reviews are accurate, the bike is fast. Even my fancy gravel bike with a 2x10 drivetrain gets a run for its money from the State. I bought this as an urban complement to the gravel bike for a simple, low maintenance, grab and go, no heavy duty bike lock needed ride, and it delivers. I went with a local bike shop for assembly in order to activate the warranty, but it's really not needed. The assembly is very straightforward. Running as a SS and it's exactly what I hoped it would be. As for sizing, I'm 5'10" with a 30in. inseam and the 52cm fits me perfectly.

Fun and Smooth Bike

This is my second State bicycle ( I also own the Rigby Core Line) and I couldn't be happier. I only ride fixed gear bikes and I was looking for a wide tire fixed gear bike. I could not find such a bike outside of a Tracklocross bike, which was not drilled for brakes. Yes, I run front and rear brakes on my fixed gear bikes. I took a chance on the 4130 because I was extremely pleased with my Rigby (and I love the color combination). I cannot find anything bad to say about this bike. The bike arrived in perfect condition. It took me about 30 minutes to build, which includes swapping the tires. The fact that every bolt (including crank arms) were torqued properly, blew me away. In addition, the brake pads were toed-in properly, which never happens. The ride is beyond smooth. I swapped the stock tires for a set of 700x40 Michelin ProTeks. The bike feels like it floats - fast, smooth, and comfortable. I upgraded the saddle to the Selle Italia - Model X Comfort - Green Plus Superflow. This is an awesome saddle, comfortable does not begin to describe how good it feels. I found my do-it-all bike. If you're thinking about purchasing this bike - do it - you won't regret it.

Great fixie!!

I purchased this as a replacement for a fixie I foolishly gave away when I left Philly. I've set it up with a 46x19 drivetrain (different sprockets are available from State). I'm 72, and I needed a slightly lower gear. The bike with its fat tires (700C x 38) is perfect for the rough roads and paths of the Denver area. Sturdy, well made, and the brakes are fine; the budget saddle is comfy once it's properly adjusted. I'm loving the exhilaration of the fixed ride, and the endorphins I get the next day from really exerting myself. I'm considering getting another one and setting it up as a town bike, using the freewheel, putting on racks, and mounting fenders (it will even take them with the 38mm tires). Well done, State!!! What I always wanted in a fixed gear bike and was never able to find.

Love this bike

Got this bike a few months ago and I absolutely love it. It became my primary mode of transport and I have never been happier. It can handle junky city streets, sidewalks, unmaintained bike paths, and even a bit of off roading. I switched out the stock cranks to the aerodash crankset and it turned my 4130 fixed gear from a speed demon to an absolute speed monster. I have a really easy time keeping up with 25-30 mph traffic on busier roads. I cant recommend this bike enough for someone who's looking to get around their city by bike. This is a great choice for the money

Love it!!

Just received my new Navy/Gold 4130 today. The box arrived pretty beat up. So much that I snapped a few pics just in case. Unboxing revealed that my new bike was FLAWLESS! She’s everything I expected. Beautiful, solid, smooth, quiet and FAST. First test ride put a smile on my face right away. Handles the rough stuff without a flinch and on smooth pavement it feels like you’re flying. Riding it fixed btw.
Thank you State. You nailed this one.

Stunning classic

I’ve gone through a few bikes in the past 10 years, looking for something that meets my needs. During that time I figured out that I like a single-speed, Chromoly road bike with the capability to run wider tires. The state 4130 Navy/Gold ticked all the boxes, and I love it. I always expect that I’m going to need to change things on my bike but I don’t feel the need to change much if anything. Maybe a stem that raises the handlebars a little.

The bike is well made, with no defects, the chain was tensioned correctly and even the brakes were pretty much calibrated correctly out of the box. I did end up getting the State Alloy pedals, which are phenomenal. To top it all off, it’s an absolutely gorgeous bike. I look forward to every ride.

Love my state Bike

This is the second state bike I have owned. Just like the previous one, it is sleek, rides smooth, and is easy to upkeep. Works perfectly well for me as someone who uses their bike to commute through an urban environment.

Single-Speed Fun

I got into cycling during the pandemic out of the need to do something while the gyms were closed, and my aluminum frame hybrid and road bikes are great. But, I wanted a steel bike that reminded me of what bikes looked like when I was a kid, and the State 4130 was the series I kept coming back to. When I found the hidden discount code, I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a single speed, thinking I'd use it for slow, casual rides. Turns out, that's the one thing I haven't used it for yet.

I've ridden it for up to 15 miles in a single go, and in street clothes no less. I've done neighborhood rides (and I live in a hilly town), recreational rides on nearby bike paths, and even some commuting to the grocery store. It is comfortable and smooth on the rough roads I've taken it on, and it's also surprisingly quick for a single speed--the gear ratio is just right. With no shifters to worry about, you can just go in the two gears we all have: sitting down and standing up. Also, it's navy and gold. This thing is gorgeous.

I had the bike professionally assembled, and other than a minor cosmetic issue with the seat that State promptly fixed, there were no problems with the frame or components. If I had to nitpick, I'd say the brakes aren't as good as I'm used to, but I'm used to lighter bikes that usually have disc brakes, so that's not a surprise. They are good enough to slow and stop the bike.

State had a no win situation with me. I was replacing my beloved ANT Light Roadster, a commuter built by the legendary (if he isn't, he should be) Mike Flanigan. I commuted on my Roadster year round in Boston for 20 years, it has around 100,000 miles. The only original part left is the frame. As you can tell, I loved that bike.
The 4130 is a solid bike, I bought it for an urban commuter and that seems to be the target market. The frame geometry is more like a cross bike (lower center of gravity - probably the reason why I think the frame runs small). The parts are what you would expect for the price. All in all, a good bike for the price.
What I would have liked (State if you are listening - you also came the closest), but could not find, better parts (Boston winters will chew these parts up - fast), a more road like frame geometry, and 2 braze on eyelets (fender and rack) at the rear (I don't like the in frame mount point).
