Decent Bike for the Price

Got my 4130 and put her through the paces tonight. I’m a bicycle mechanic by trade so am pretty familiar with how these things work out of the box. A few things I’d like to address right off the bat...
1. The badge work leaves something to be desired as it’s not properly riveted on and pops off easily. MAJOR BUMMER!
2. There were a number of chips in the paint up by the head tube and around the seat clamp area. These things happen but it gives me a chance to scope the paint job, it’s pretty thin and I can tell it’ll be getting powder coated within the year most likely.
3. The seat tube down by the bottom bracket looks like it has a slight curvature to it. I’ll be checking for certain with a level tomorrow.

Aside from those few things the bike is really well put together and for the price is a great little pony to ride. She shifts smoothly, runs quiet and sprints up climbs like she was born for it. This is my second State Bicycle and I’d recommend them for entry level cyclists.

A solid $550 bike

The good: as advertised it's a solid serviceable bike at a good price point.

The no so good: the valve stems were bent on both tubes that shipped with the bike so the tubes were useless. The front wheel was not true out of the box. The deraileur is a little sticky across the middle cogs. I've played around with the tension a bit but I can't seem to get all 8 cogs dialed in just right. My sense is that State Bicycle Co. is better at fixies and single speeds than they are at geared bikes at the moment.

Almost perfect

Rides smooth and is pretty comfy with stock componentes. My bike switches gears whenever I go over a bump, so ha in gone gears auto change under you mid ride unexpectedly is a bummer. Have tried to fix it and took it into the shop, still auto-switches.

Nice Looking Bike With Durability Questions

It's a nice looking bike that shipped quickly and arrived undamaged. There were no bike shops open due to the Coronavirus pandemic, so I completed the build myself. If you have any experience it is a very simple matter. Just install the saddle and handlebars and do a safety check and you're good to go. The rear derailleur was out of whack and dropped the chain on the first shift. I adjusted and indexed it and there's been no problem shifting since.
I've was already used to downtube shifting so no problems there. In fact, the shifter is indexed so you get a satisfying click with each shift which takes the guesswork out of the shifts (a big improvement over some of the ancient Schwinns and such I'd been riding). Clunky shifting had been a major reason I stripped gears off of bikes when I lived in flat places like Philly and Chicago.
In retrospect, I wish the head tube was an extra inch taller as it's quite low upon delivery. But that's more of a matter of preference. My only complaint is durability. A spoke broke on the the rear wheel after less than 100 miles. I typically do 100 miles per week and I've never had a broken spoke in a solid decade decade plus of riding. It's possible that I've just been very lucky in going so long without such an issue, but I hardly expected this from a brand new bike. A big selling point of this bike for me was its perceived durability: 4130 frame, downtube shifters are sturdy and the general simplicity of design has fewer parts that break and need replacing. It was disappointing to have an issue so soon.

Smooth Ride!

Love, love, LOVE this bike! Arrived Friday, easy assembly, very fun to ride. Just returned from a 12 mile ride with lots of hills....Had a smile on my face the entire time. Only complaint; Arrived with a small dent on the frame (See picture) and the front wheel needed to be trued. Minor issues for a bike of this quality at this price. I am looking forward to the many miles that I will put on this beautiful bike and I will absolutely be purchasing more bikes from State in the future. Highly recommend!

Sick Bike

My first time with drop bars and downtube shifter. Was an easy transition, felt pretty comfortable with it after my first day of riding. I didn't know what to expect with downtube shifting, but I love it, so smooth. This bike looks awesome and is a nice ride, I use it for commuting and for leisure. Super stoked!

Great great bike😊

I love the bike, great great bike for the money. It is very light and my scale said 19lbs on 52cm bike. All is easy to assemble but two things you must take care of; true your wheels both front and back, and get new tires if you commute long distance like me. Overall, i love the bike very strong, light and fast, no more front derailer to tingle with. Highly recommended this 4130 geared bike. Great commuter.

Great Commuter

I received this bike about a week ago and it is a great bike, ride it everyday to work. It's a smooth solid ride. I didn't have any problems with the wheels or valves and everything went together well (I used to work in a bike shop.) A great bike for the price.

4130 Road 8 Speed

Overall frame build and paint quality is very high. Ride is extremely comfortable, and responsive, feels lighter than claimed weight. Component quality also very good for price point .... except rear derailleur. Shifting on to the bigger cogs is very wonky, also feels like there's some slippage in the shift lever. Going back to dealer for adjustment, will update review once I've done so.

Awesomeness

Smooth, almost basically the bike version of a Cadillac. Loving every moment of this bike.

So glad State decided to go gears. I wouldn’t have bought a geared bike if state didn’t make em.
