State Klunker

Purchased the moment I saw it and haven’t looked back! Absolutely love the bike, tough enough for taking the off road route to the brewery and smooth enough for the road back home. Had an issue with a missing part but the State customer service team did not disappoint.
10/10 would buy again. Thanks State!

Perfect Multi-use Bicycle!

Fast shipping, easy to assemble, very comfortable, excellent design, well built, good components, great price. I’m 63 and wanted more comfort and versatility than a diamond frame bike provides, I ride the mostly flat to mild hill streets in a busy city of 60,000 population out in the desert southwest. Plenty of trails nearby too from easy to deadly. Also wanted a grocery getter/errand runner that wasn’t complicated and was fast on the streets. This bike does it all.
I mounted Maxxis Hookworms 2.5” tires and it rides like skinny tire road bike now. FAST. Those tires at 65psi are hard as a rock. I’m 6’0”/220lbs and the rear tire barely bulges under my weight with 20-30 lbs. groceries. I will build a set of wheels for the Maxxis Vigilantes that came with it and use those on the moderate trails. But the HookWorms are fine for exercise trails and crossing vacant lots. NOTE: Please run a sealant in your tubes. Saves a LOT of headaches! I use Orange Seal. Works great!
Also replaced the seat (too narrow for my aging butt) with the broken in Brooks B67 off my diamond frame bike. And I added an Ibera rear rack for use with canvas saddle bag panniers for groceries. Works like a charm. NOTE: the bike has no dropout holes for a rack but seat stay lugs are present. I drilled and tapped one hole in each rear dropout for mounting the rack (see pic). Also, with cloth saddle bags, I chose the Ibera rack for disc brakes because it mounts about an inch off the dropout with a spacer, moving it further away from the wheel by about an inch each side. Keeps the cloth bags out of the spokes when riding them empty.
ALSO NOTE: Drilling the rear dropout voids the warranty. But it’s void anyway if you assemble the bike yourself. I wasn’t gonna pay $50 to a shop to do such a simple assembly. But if you’re tool-less and clue-less on such matters, have a shop assemble your bike. After that you have to jump through some paperwork loops to properly register your bike for warranty. Check the SBC website for warranty details.
I highly recommend this bike as there is nothing like it on the market. For a multi-use bike you can’t beat it. With a little seat/tire tweaking and maybe a rack if needed, you can make it your own perfect ride.

Coolest beach cruiser since the Specialized Shark! The wide 27.5's make it even better!

After just completing what became a crazy expensive fat bike project, for beach use I now realize this is what I need for my beach trips! The 27.5 x 2.3 tires offer massive cushiness/ float on sand/ and rock and root gripping ability. A S/M and M/L size would add some complication and expense but would be an improvement. A bottle opener INTEGRATED into the frame would be cool too (like the Sharks gusset). Also, perhaps a board rack option, front basket (don't laugh-once you use one you will never go back) to pack for a full day out would be nice, and maybe a 40 oz. sized "water" bottle cage for the ride back to camp...I REALLY like the 22 tooth-large rear cog. It will last FAR LONGER, and is far more efficient than 16 tooth cogs so over used...You could have put on 32x16, had a similar gear but didn't-shows great sense and concern for long term durability...big/big gears for single speeds especially make sense-shows State design teams subtle prowess.

Klunker Warranty

Wrote a review earlier but forgot the one gripe I have. That is that the bike has to be assembled by a bike shop in order to receive the warranty. This is uncalled for. Other direct sales bike companies do not have this requirement. I'm 71 years old and have been building, racing, riding and repairing bikes for 50 of those 71 years. My stable still consists of 11 bicycles that I ride, I have a full compliment of bike tools that will rival any bike shop. By the way when I checked all fasteners I did find that the crankarm bolts as well as the chainring bolts were loose, very loose. Other than that everything was as expected. It's a fun ride for trails here in Bend Oregon.

Decent Bike, Ridiculous Warranty

The bike is good and will fit a range of family members. The warranty requires professional assembly for a bike with no gears, no levers and essentially nothing to adjust. So you spend a good price for a good bike and then add the cost of a local shop setting up a bike with no settings. That just turned the cost benefit equation upside down.

No issues with the bike itself, it's well built and fun as hell to rip around on. The reason it's not a five star rating is that when the bike was delivered it was missing the handlebar grips and bottle opener. I contacted SBC and they sent the grips out, but in the meantime I bought some from the local bike shop.

The Klunker. What is it? A beautiful, retro-inspired, mash-up of: part beach cruiser, part mountain bike, and part BMX. The perfect “DGAF” bike, for neighborhood cruises, trips to the corner store, and walking the dog….OR… if you’re feeling audacious, mount up and rip a trail.

The SBC Klunker has the durable wheels, frame, and handlebars of a BMX bike, with ground-eating mountain bike tires, so mount up and rip a trail if you are feeling audacious. It is the ultimate all-purpose bicycle. Think of all the advantages:

  • Simplicity. No gears to shift. No derailleurs or cables to adjust and maintain.
  • 27.5” wheels for easy rolling and 2.3”-2.4" WTB knobby tires** for durability and traction.
  • The Klunker has a coaster brake. Nothing could be simpler, more durable, and maintenance-free.
  • The Klunker has a comfortable, upright seating position.
  • The Klunker is provided with flat pedals. Ride with any shoes, even sandals.
  • Order your Klunker with optional LED lights, pedal straps, water bottle cage, and bike lock. The bottle opener is standard!

** some models may ship with WTB, CST or other brands (subject to change) due to availability. (not pictured).

All these features make the Klunker a practical commuter bike. But the SBC Klunker is downright cool and turns heads. It is totally awesome and minimalist at the same time!

The State Bicycle Klunker is built to take a beating and look good while doing it. It will never let you down. The Klunker will deliver more smiles per mile than any other bike. It’s the most bike and fun you can buy for under $500.00.
